What time is it, Mr. Wolf?

Last year in my history of sculpture class there was an 80-90 year old student. He was so frail that he could not attend an outing to the cemetery due to the risk of dying. I really respect and admire people who attend university solely for the pleasure of learning, of gaining knowledge and broadening their perspective. I often get the feeling I am just another frantic animal in this stampede to get a degree on paper, start my 'real' life. But I am gradually discovering that learning, experimenting and making connections with other intelligent, talented creatures will probably be one of the most enjoyable and rich experiences of my life. Unfortunately the clock is ticking and I need to take a full load each semester, and if not then make up with summer courses. I am not able to give the proper time to every course I am taking or every budding friendship I would love to strengthen. Some classes and relationships are becoming more neglected and that makes me feel very uneasy and anxious. Hopefully I will be able to devote tomorrow and the weekend to catching up with my workload at least.

I really want to do a series of paintings and drawings [unrelated to each other]. I have never created a body of work [outside of photography] where the pieces compliment each other and work from the same theme. My next painting project seems like the perfect place to start since we have to do three smaller studies and one larger finished work. The theme is 'Bad Day' and all I can think about is roadkill. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas that I can apply to this theme? I feel I need fresh perspectives to help spark my imagination.

Also, does anyone know where I can buy simple, elegant and relatively inexpensive wall frames? I'm going to try to make a trip out to Ikea soon, but if anyone can suggest somewhere else in Montreal or online I can go to as well that would be great. Oh, and I need a new prescription for Tricyclen. Anyone know of decent drop-in clinics I can go to?

Just a few photo from yesterday and this morning because why not?

It was flurrying and beautiful yesterday morning.

In drawing class yesterday we watched a dystopian Russian movie called Stalker.
We were asked to draw with the film feeding us visuals. It was very stunning and slow paced, so perfect for the task.
They're just sloppy/fun drawings done in charcoal. Nothing amazing.

These aren't mine, but I really enjoy these lovely chicken/human creatures so I thought I'd share.

I trailed out of ceramics and got distracted. I wish this photo were more in focus.

Photos of the lights for the movie set.

They're so bright they lit up the apartments! Must have been annoying for the residents.

Here's a crappy photo of the set. Today when I came up from the metro they were shooting a scene, so I was redirected.
But I sneaked into a parking garage on the other side of the street and spied on the cast and crew for a while, though I couldn't make out anyone famous since they were all bundled up.

Yesterday I got my hair cut, though no one noticed. It wasn't anything drastic, just bangs and a trim.
Well, this morning when I awoke this is what my bangs looked like. My first thought was David Bowie.

Hahahaha.

Goodnight!

Is it terrible that this made me giggle?

RE: 'Bad Day', I automatically think of little annoyances that add up. Stupid things like frizzy hair, unexpected rain, empty staplers, a broken heel, etc. I have no idea if that makes sense for your project, though.

And yeah, those chicken men are no less than great.

Haha, no, it made me giggle too. It was an awkward sentence to write.

Thanks for your input!

My imediate thougts on the bad day theme. a sad hitler as soviet tanks rumble into germany. is this strange? I guese what im sugesting is take historical precedents and turn em into bad days as if they were common inconveniences. or just do common inconveniences like misssing the bus and so on .

Good luck!

Hehe, that's an interesting idea. I feel as though I can always count on you for the political perspective.

There is or was a restaurant in Windsor called The Roadkill Cafe.

I think I have heard of this, or another restaurant similarly named.

Actually, it's Hammer time!

I tried to do a search to find out what the movie could be, but it was fruitless! I am so curious, I will have to go spy too!

I really like the second drawing, specially the eyes on the right!

Also, if you want, let me know when you are going to Ikea, I need a laundry basket ASAP! ZAP ZAP! Not really, but I would like to get one soon.

4 hour's later....

I found it!
It appears the movie is "The Factory" but there's not much info about it.

HOLY SHIT I was super close to John Cusack! He has starred in some of my favorite films!

And I am thinking to go to Ikea on Sunday. You in?

Actually, I did notice the bangs today, but I thought I was wrong. BUT I WASN'T!!!!!

For the frames I would either try the dollar store or second hand stores (Salvation Army or Value Village)

NO YOU WEREN'T! Yay!

I've actually gone to a few second hand stores, but I'm looking for a frame that I can purchase many copies of. And the dollar store ones are too cheap/plastic/ugly. Heh.

for the Bad Day series do you want funny pictures or sad pictures? i have suggestions for both

i like the ceramics lab picture in the mirror

Both please! The theme, like most themes can be very broad. It can even be a solution to a bad day, so it doesn't necessarily have to be something negative.

That's not actually the ceramics lab, hehe. It's an open painting studio. I wandered around hoping to find a friendly face to converse with for a bit.

I'll assume that these are going to be paintings or drawings so i won't take reality into account for some of the funny ones

FUNNY IDEAS:
* Laura opening the fridge and seeing the food waving around picket signs, protesting being eaten
* a fish bowl with a trail of water leading away and a note stuck to the bowl saying "gone forever" or something, like the goldfish ran away
* Laura is half-in the dryer, digging around for that missing sock that's GOT to be in there, Phil is standing behind her with a mischievous grin on his face and a stance like he's about to push her in
* Laura is standing with an empty ice-cream cone looking mad because the triple scoop has fallen off her cone and is now a multi-colored splat on the pavement.

SERIOUS IDEAS:
* a toaster with smoke pouring out of it next to a coffee maker that's spilling coffee everywhere
* several people standing at a cross-walk with umbrellas up protecting them from the heavy rain, Laura is in the middle with no umbrella and is very wet
* Laura is stuck on the bus with several screaming children
* Laura and Phil are standing outside their favorite diner and it has a "Closed" sign on the door

that kind of what you're looking for?

It's surprising that I am involved in most of these paintings. I didn't even think of that possibility. Interesting...

The funny ones make me think of possible snow coast comics. Though I would never go looking for a missing sock because for the last 6 years of my life I have been wearing my socks mismatched. My family doctor thought it was a brilliant idea and even remembered me the next time I went in because of it. I really inspired him.

Thank you for all your ideas. They have been added to the pool in my brain and are currently doing the breaststroke.

"bad day" makes me think of wanting to stay in bed, or curl up in bed after I get home from a bad day, and sulk.

also, depending on what you're putting in said ikea frames.. I must advise against them. they have those ridiculous metal tabs on the back which generally snap off after being used x number of times, and their dimensions are in cm rather than inches so I had to trim down my prints from standard dimensions to unusual ones. plus the glass in them is greenish (as you would get from any cheap frame)
depends on what's going in them &why you're framing it. for my b&w photos, and hanging in an exhibition, ikea frames were not the right choice.

It would certainly be interesting to paint a series of beds or blankets. Painting fabric is certainly something I need to practice on.

Hmm, thanks for the advice. I was thinking of putting original pieces of art of varying sizes in them, so it definitely wouldn't be prints of a set size. But I am definitely not a fan of the greenish glass. I will go anyway, since I need to for other stuff and check them out.

Frames: I got some at Home Sense in Ottawa, but I don't know the equivalent in Montreal, unless they have the store here, too. Walmart and Zellers too, sometimes have surprisingly good quality for a lower price as far as frames and home furnishing stuff goes.

I know what you mean about the degree and time, though. I feel like I'm zooming though this way too quickly, just to get the degree and get out. It's mostly because I am itching to start my life with my boyfriend in Ottawa, and start pimpin' my works at Ottawa galleries and whatnot, then make my way back to Montreal as a real practising artist... someday.

I did also drop a class this semester so that I'm not taking the full 5 load, just so I can breathe a little. And my last 3 credits before I graduate are free electives so I'm doing them online.

school can be so full of opportunities and at the same time so stressful and constraining..

Oh yeah, there are actually quite a few Home Sense stores in Montreal! There's actually one on Décarie! Thanks for that suggestion I will definitely try to check it out.

I can totally understand the desire to start your life in Ottawa. You seem like you have a pretty solid plan laid out before you so that's definitely a great thing. I think because my future is still so wide open I feel like I am running around blindly like a chicken with no head since I don't have any solid plans.

i love those chicken/human creatures too! it's pretty nerdy, but they remind me of that character in zelda (for the wii) that allows you to warp in and out of temples.

Oh! I forgot to mention before, but I got my birth control prescription at the Concordia Health clinic. You can find a link to their site through the concordia website that will give you the address. It's not a walk-in but I was able to make an appointment for the next week.

Also- HOLY SHIT, JOHN CUSACK????
